Literature Text

Blue moonlight tumbled through the open window and spilled across the floor, gracefully staining everything in reach to a light sapphire. You huddled the blankets closer about your shoulders as you sat watching from your bed, the curtains stirred in the cool winter air and as another whirl of wind came they reared up, flapping loudly, threatening to knock the vase of flowers down while they waved madly in the air as if possessed. You jumped from your warm sheets and hurried across the hardwood floor to shut the window. Sighing as the quiet still was returned to you, you checked the rooftops your window looked over once more, before drawing the curtains closed and  returning to bed.

The day had been lovely, it wasn't that you were ungrateful, quite the opposite in fact, you had spent time with your family, what more could you wish for? It was only that you had hoped to see him, not really because of your birthday, it was just to know he was safe and well.

***

Your skin felt cold, eyes still closed and your mind half clouded with sleep as you reached around for your blankets, irritated that you must have kicked them off earlier, your hand continued to wonder the empty bed, feeling around to no avail. 'Meow.' A small noise came, followed by a quite 'Shh!'

For a second you felt afraid to open your eyes, the sound of the curtains billowing in the night's strong breeze was a warning to get out, and fast. You swallowed a breath of the cool night air and shot up in bed, fully ready to flee the room down the hall to your brother and demand he fend off this intruder. But upon sitting up your eyes found a familiar person, Ezio, struggling to hush the curtains as he fumbled with cold hands to close the window.

“Ezio Auditore!” You exclaimed, making the poor man jump as he turned quickly to face you.

“Ciao (y/n)...ah, Happy Birthday!” He greeted in a cheeky whisper.

“I will have you know that you half scared me to death!” You snapped, trying your best to frown at the puppy eyes he was now making.

“I...I had no such intentions, I swear, I knocked first, I really did.” He promised,  his hands clasped together to emphasise his plead.

“I'm sure, well-” You stopped yourself, tired eyes widening as you noticed the bandage on his hand. “Ezio, your hand, what happened?” You climbed quickly from the bed to better inspect the Italians injury.

“Oh, nothing serious.” He chuckled at your concern, turning to click the windows shut.
'Meow.'

You frowned “What was tha-”

Ezio coughed and tapped his chest. “Sorry, I have a bit of a cough around me.”

'Meow.” It came again, before he coughed, which seemed forced.

You arched an eyebrow of confusion, before shaking it off and reaching for his hand. “So, what happened.” You said, studying the roughly constructed bandage in the frail light.

“I found myself in a bit of a tangle with a dog, that's all.” He explained.

“A dog?” You questioned, moving to light some candles. “Oh you mean a guard or someone.”

He snorted in amusement. “A fair assessment, but no, this was an actual dog.”

“Ezio, that may be infected.” You fretted aloud as you opened the small drawer where you kept all things of a medicinal nature, finding a fresh bandage and some solution to cleanse his wound.”

“I've had worse.” He assured, holding his hand outwards for you.

You frowned as you began to peel back layers of the bloody bandage, stained darkly where it had began to dry. “Oh Ezio, you always do manage to get yourself into trouble, don't you.” You scolded gently.

“Si, and where would I be without my nurse to take care of me.” He whispered, a small smile crinkling his eyes.

You smirked back lightly. “Dead...” after a long pause you added, “or at some angry doctors.”

He grinned. “And just why would he be so angry.”

“Being called on at such late hours.” You reminded, discarding the filthy bandage to the bin and taking a fresh cloth to clean his bloody hand. “I'm sorry, this stuff stings I'm afraid.”

The assassin hissed slightly. “I hadn't noticed.” He added through a small wince.

“So, how did you get into a tangle with a dog?” You questioned as you started to wrap the fresh white linen around his hand.

“It had cornered a little someone and I was trying to make him see clear to leaving them alone, but he decided my hand was a good price instead.” Ezio explained, admiring your handiwork with the bandage.

You listened, curious to the story. “Did you have to...hurt the dog?” You asked, voice very low now.

“No, he ran off after I tore my hand away.”

You wondered if he was lying nicely to you, or telling the truth about the animals fate, either way he had not mentioned the dog's victim. “So, who was the dog attacking before you came along?”

“Well, I hope you don't mind but, I brought her here, I thought you could take care of her.” Ezio explained.

“Her?” You questioned, looking around the room for 'her'.

“Well.” Ezio reached into a small pouch around his waist, from it he pulled a tiny white kitten, she was very thin, with a small cut across her pink button nose and two honey coloured eyes that peered up into your own. A weak little mew left her mouth as she studied your face.

“Aww, hello little girl.” You said softly, taking her gently from Ezio's hands and snuggling her against yourself. “She's so thin.” You muttered, running your fingers down her sides.

“I know, the poor little lady must have been a stray, she didn't stand a chance when she found herself cornered by that dog.”

“Oh the poor baby.” You said, shaking your head. “Well, we will have to feed you up, yes we will.” You cooed the small kitten. “Oh she'll need a collar, and some toys, and a bed.” You began, walking back towards the bed with her in your arms.

Ezio chuckled lightly. “I will take you shopping in the morning, by all accounts I owe you a birthday.”

You smiled before turning to the bed and placing the little kitten on it. “She needs a name.”

“True.” He agreed, moving his hand to pet her.

You watched her eyes widen slightly, arching her heckles as she hissed at him. “Well she doesn't like you much.”

He sighed. “I know, and to think how all the ladies normally love me.” He teased. “Actually I have more scratches from her that I care to think, but she seems to approve of you.”

“Hm, she does.” You mused.

He smiled. “Well, she is a good judge of character in that sense.”

“Thank you Ezio, for bringing her here.” You scratched her small ears and smiled as she began to purr.

“You didn't think I would miss seeing you on your birthday?”

You turned and rested your hands on his shoulders. “With what you do, my love, I never know what to expect.”

He rested his forehead against your own. “Do I detect concern?” The assassin teased, brushing the side of his nose against your own.

You huffed lightly. “Of course.” Standing on your tiptoes to press a soft kiss to his lips. “Well, tomorrow I want you to be all mine, Templars will have to wait!”

“As you command mi'lady.” He promised, slipping an arm around your waist before lifting you into  the air as if you were newly weds and carrying you to the bed. “But tonight, I want you to be all mine...”
